TEA Members,

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year.  We hope you had a relaxing and rejuvenating summer, so that you are ready for an incredible school year.  TEA has been working hard for members this summer, as well as throughout last and previous school years.  We are educators, advocating for the amazing educators in TUSD.  To that end, here are a few things that we want you to be aware of that have taken place in the recent past:

  • TEA negotiated the fourth-straight salary increase for all employees. We also secured language that guarantees the 1% increase from the Legislature’s Teacher salary increase, paid this school year.
  • Improvements in language for both Certified and Classified Agreements (pending ratification/approval):                 Classified: Reduced Letters of Reprimand down to 18 months.                                                                                                Clarified an ESP’s ability to leave with the kids the day before a holiday.                           Certified:  Improved and clarified 6/5ths language.                                                                                                                                   Created a timeline for disciplinary action by an administrator to a teacher.                                                        Clarified language for Exceptional Education Teachers.                                                                                                   Added language stating “Students will be removed from the classroom for a                                    minimum of 30 minutes or the remainder of the period, provided it is                                                         consistent with the Code of Conduct.”
  • TEA worked tirelessly to address the underutilization of the 301 pay for performance fund. The district had allowed the pay for performance account to balloon over multiple years.  TEA responded to the complaints made by members, held forums, shared out the options, and then made sure that the option that was overwhelmingly selected became the plan that was moved through the 301 Committee.  This became Amendment #1, resulted in teachers receiving hundreds and often times thousands of dollars, and spent down the 301 pay for performance account.
  • TEA made certain that counselors, social workers, and nurses did not lose any salary wages as we transitioned in the 2017-2018 contract.

TEA has been the representing employees in TUSD for nearly 100 years.  From when TUSD was a small school district, to the strike of 1978, to when Classified employees joined TEA in the late 80s, TEA has been the consistent advocates for improved salaries and working conditions.  Certificated staff have seen a nearly $4000 salary increase in less than 4 years, and classified staff members have received between 5 and 6.9% in increases over the same time.  Additionally, TEA has been and will continue to be on the forefront of improving public education funding in Arizona, because we know every student deserves a quality education.  The actions listed, as well as so many others, is why TEA continues to grow.  We have increased our membership by nearly 20% in the past two years alone.  TEA will continue to be the advocates, the protectors, the experts, and the voice of educators, as this is what our amazing TEA members deserve.

Thank you for your commitment to the Tucson community, to our students, and to TEA.  We wish you a wonderful 2017-2018 school year, and hope to see you at an AR meeting, a political event, at a Governing Board Meeting, and/or at a TEA social.  Thank you for being the hero to our kids.

Jason Freed

TEA President

TEA Members,

Below is a link for ratification of the Agreement.  The TEA Bargaining Team worked tirelessly for the last 5 months negotiating improvements.  We strongly encourage all TEA members to vote for ratification of the Agreement.  Assuming they are ratified, the Consensus Agreement and White Color Food Service Agreement will be voted upon by the TUSD Governing Board on August 8th.  The ballot is now open, and will close on August 7th.  Thank you for voting, and for your support of TEA.  Have a great start to the school year.

Jason Freed, on behalf of the TEA Bargaining Team
